Sihanoukville impressions

Sihanoukville Impressions
Everyone I told I will be going to Sihanoukville soon, said it’s a horrible place. And it probably was before Covid, with ten thousands of Chinese tourists and construction work going on everywhere.

But now, with most business closed and most construction work stopped, it has a feeling of abandonment and post-apocalypse which I like. Reminds me of Berlin in 1945.
But still enough places (hotels, restaurants, markets) open to satisfy my basic needs.

With
most hotels closed and public transport reduced, I have to call bus company to ask if and when they have a bus (nowadays mostly only vans) and call hotel to check if they are open. Originally I wanted to go to Kep, but for lack of public transport changed to Sihanoukville. Two lions roundabout, a landmark in Sihanoukville:

There are still empty plots of land:

A small house between two big buildings:

Three generations of urban development from left to right: 1980, 2000, 2020 (my interpretation, I don't know how old these buildings are).

One of the many abandoned construction sites:

Most of these structures don't have load-bearing walls, only floor/ceiling and columns. At the right angle, you can look through them. Another one with a shack in front (instead of moving in):

The casino is closed and all buildings behind are unfinished. Many people must have lost a lot of money in the real estate and construction and entertainment business in Sihanoukville.

A
bandoned sidewalk and sewer construction:

When everything is finished, they will have nice wide roads and sidewalks. But at the moment, it looks like North Korea or Naypyitaw (wide roads and sidewalks, but no cars or pedestrians; info from internet, I haven't been).

But some business will be up to 1 m above or below the current road/sidewalk level.

On the hill, there is no sewer and water runs down the road like a river:

Few windows to road, but many to the side with no view due to new building under construction:

Inhabitants of this building (front and side view combined to one picture) face an even worse fate when the plot next to them gets a high-rise:

First I thought these statues are Greek or Roman gods, but then I went close and saw they are Jesus and (who is in the middle?).

All casinos do not allow Cambodians to enter. This is the first time I learnt of something like this, no entry for locals!

In Street 805, there are several lady bars, one with three levels of  steps to sit on. And in the same road, 50 m away from the nearest lady bar,
is a church (Sihanoukville Presbyterian Church)!

I
read somewhere about streetside prostitution called Chicken Farm, but on the internet I found only old reports without location. Most interesting first:

The following title sounds promising, but this must be the worst video I ever watched. Very little content. 2 thumbs up and 12 thumbs down is justified:

One would think after exposure to Chinese tourists and current economical hardship due to Covid, everyone is hardened and wary of Foreigners. But no, everyone I met here was nice, even tuktuk
drivers not pushy.
All boys I met here could speak Chinese, some even read and write. Most businesses have Chinese names, and in the supermarket there were mostly Chinese products.

An amazing place if you like abandonment and urban decay! A fascinating
juxtaposition of partially demolished old buildings, abandoned construction sites, interrupted sewer and sidewalk construction (at one end not finished yet, on the other end already damaged).

WOP: Cambodian Boys

Words of Praise: Cambodian boys

Cambodian boys continue to excel in all aspects: activities, character, communication, intellectually. If this (Covid and Cambodia the only place to go) had happened to me 5 years ago (when I had poor success with Thai boys), I would have moved to Cambodia for the boys. Now I have more experience with Thai boys, and because I can speak Thai I have access to all Thai boys, I can find and pick the few gems in Thailand.

This judgment is distorted. In Thailand I can date any boy because I speak Thai, but in Cambodia I can only date boys who speak English which is a positive selection. I have a Farang friend in Thailand who speaks Thai but dates only in English for this reason. Whereas two other Farang friends date only in Thai and find English a turn-off.

The downside is, in provinces in Cambodia, choice of boys is poor. Whereas in Thailand, I can get boys in the provinces as well.

Many boys have a motorbike. Whereas in Thailand, often discussion about taxi money before meeting. About half of the boys I met can give a good massage. Some boys can bend their fingers backwards.

Khmer boys either have fewer money problems than Thai boys, or don’t expect me to help them. Whereas many Thai are like drug addicts, and their money problems are the first thing on their mind: I need money for food NOW, I need money for mobile phone TOMORROW, and I need money for rent NEXT WEEK!

If I had to generalize, it would be: Khmer boys are sincere (looking for love, relationship, sex), Thai boys are devious (sex as a means to get material advantage).

Some boys I met here have interesting backgrounds, whereas Thailand mostly: village, buffalo. I met several polyglot Khmer boys. Several boys have a small side business, importing stuff (shoes, clothes, bags, cosmetics) from Thailand or China to sell. That means all this stuff is more expensive in Cambodia, at the same time Cambodia being a poorer country.

Fake profiles (i.e. not the boy’s pictures) or poor pictures is a problem here as well. My favorite boys all had their pictures either in profile or sent it to me on request, so one might skip all fake profiles or poor pictures. There is a correlation between level of English and quality of profile and performance/character.

I had boys begging to allow me to come to see me in Thailand as well, but I never had a boy who thanked me afterwards in Thailand, but in Cambodia.

The only negative is use of poppers. More boys (both absolute and relative) in Cambodia than in Thailand asked me for poppers.

No mobile phone addiction
Many Thai boys I met are social-media-zombies and you have to pry the phone out of their hands during intercourse (it’s a turn-off for me when the boy plays on his phone during foreplay or post-coital cuddling). This has not been an issue in Cambodia and then I had an idea: I’m dating the last generation that had a childhood without mobile phones. Ask one boy: 23 years old, got his first phone at age 15.

This graph (generated from https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/compare-countries/, see here as well https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/Cambodia/Mobile_phone_subscribers/) shows that in 2011 there were as many mobile phones as people in Cambodia, and I assume from then on people had excess mobile phones to give to babies and children to play, resulting in permanent brain damage.

Whereas https://asiafoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Mobile-Phones-and-Internet-Use-in-Cambodia-2016.pdf on page 13 looks at smartphones and reports the following numbers: 2013 20%, 2014 26%, 2015 40%, 2016 48% from which I extrapolate 2018 100%.

Still no boyfriend
My current stay in Cambodia is the closest I ever got to having a boyfriend. The longest period I have been seeing a boy regularly (several boys actually), longest period not paying for sex, several times not on gay online dating for several days (but then, when one boy failed me, eagerly back).

The only reason why I haven’t taken any of the BFCs as a BF so far is my lifestyle and greediness. I want brown skin AND slim body AND nice abs AND nice character AND no money problems AND … all in one boy.

The same reasons why I haven’t found a new job: I want everything! NMR spectroscopy service as good as in the UK, food as good as in France (I still relish the memories of lunches at work, salmon – boiled, not fried! – and pizza margarita with goat cheese, and the desserts!), library as good as in Berlin, and friends who have worked in industry told me everyone has their own work computer. Can you imagine how awesome that would be, you don’t have to share the one computer in the lab/office with your colleagues?

Good boys would want me to find a job, bad boys would want to jump on the gravy train that is my life. Only once did I meet someone who is compatible (got rich through hard work and investment in his 20s, now travelling the world in his 30s).

For me, having fun with boys is like going to a restaurant. I wouldn’t want to eat at the same restaurant, or the same dish, all the time. A boy in Cambodia once asked me why I don’t have a boyfriend, and I said, I wouldn’t want to eat my favorite food every day. He replied “But they are people.”

C
hristianPFC gives relationship advice!
A German friend GF dates girls (and the occasional ladyboy) and his experiences here are similar to Thailand. Some interesting stories, and I can even give him some relationship advice.

When we were out together, he took pictures of us to send to his girlfriend as proof where he is and what he is doing. He even asked me to join him for a trip to the province (so he can meet another girl) to be his alibi. Completely wrong approach, I don’t have to justify where I am and what I’m doing to anyone.

Several times, he didn’t reply to her messages for a few hours and she went crazy. I was in a similar situation with Jane, whom I had to wean off the idea of calling me whenever he feels bored or thinks of me, leave messages unanswered for a day (even though I read them earlier). Tell GF he does not have to be on the phone all the time, and one day without replying to her messages should become normal.

Once GF asked me how I refused to give money to a boy. I just write: NO. Period. Turns out, he always tried to justify why he will not give money to a girl, which led to endless discussion.

GF says the girls are mostly at the ends of the spectrum: hookers who have sex on first date for money, and “no sex before marriage” with little in between.

Guasha and cupping
Some boys have pictures with red stripes on their body in their online dating profiles. I asked one and it’s not sexual (like love bites), but a medical treatment that is similar to Chinese Gua Sha. Siang Pure Balm (similar to Tiger Balm) is applied to the skin and the skin is scrapped with the lid with pressure to cause these red stripes. Related Cupping leaves round red spots.

Underwear in Cambodia
Underwear expensive and not my taste, brown looks shit (both figuratively and literally). These cost indeed 2.50 USD each, which is more expensive than in Thailand!

The only saving grace is silver or grey waistbands, which I like.

Do not confuse: Centipede and Millipede

Do not confuse: Centipede and Millipede

They look similar to the untrained eye (adults about 15 cm long, brown color), but are very different: centipede runs fast, will attack (bite) when threatened, is rare (I have only seen a few); millipede runs slow, will curl up when disturbed, is frequent (in spring I have seen hundreds).

Centipede ตะขาบ dtà-kàap
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolopendra_subspinipes

In 2013, I was chatting with a group of Thai who were sitting on the ground and having food and drink, when suddenly a centipede appeared and everyone jumped up, and someone grabbed a tool to kill the centipede.

The above mentioned centipede. Left dead, upper side (dorsal). Right decapitated, lower side (ventral).

Their only defense is a smelly secret that can irritate skin but seems to deter predators (why else would there be so many centipedes?).

In spring, they can occur in large numbers. I count 7 or 8 millipedes in this picture:

I find it fascinating to watch the movement of their legs when they walk. Here in picture:

and here in video:

Two millipede curled up (for reproduction?). When disturbed, a single millipede curls up the same way.

Most millipedes are on ground, but recently I saw one climbing a tree:
