Bangkok gay saunas 2023
Overview of currently open or recently closed gay saunas in Bangkok. So much has changed since last year https://christianpfc.blogspot.com/2022/05/bangkok-gay-saunas-2022.html requiring a new post.

New: some locations in coordinates. Over last years, I found that several places I saved on google maps were moved to an incorrect location, and I submitted corrections.

This post is mostly armchair research. I have only been to a few. In all other cases I just called or checked their Facebook, Twitter, Line. In these uncertain times it's better to call everywhere to make sure they are open. Times are in 24-hour-system, omitting zero minutes for full hours.

There is a list in Thai of 58 gay venues in Bangkok, see end of post, that I used for this update as well. Has names and locations in Thai. Includes gogo bars, karaoke, discos, some I have never heard of.

Some places have shows or orgies or other special events, not covered in this post. Some places have theme days, not covered either.

There were no gay activities. Entertain my readers with other subjects, mostly travel and memes from internet.

After two months in Germany, I start seeing penises everywhere:

Here I came across a place where I could get one (vagina). In the sense of getting access to a vagina, not as sex change. Prostitution is legal in Germany.  A job like any other, at least not dusty, as my loyal reader Vinapu puts it.

The movie “Pretty Woman” was in TV in Germany. Romantic comedy is not a type of movie I usually watch, but both the movie (Richard Gere, Julia Roberts 1990) and the song (unrelated to the movie, “Oh, Pretty Woman” Roy Orbison 1964) are famous, making the movie worth watching to fill a gap in general knowledge. Quite entertaining, and pertaining to my activities in Thailand, highly recommended to every punter and service provider!

I had plans to go to Brazil and Colombia, but flight prices were unreasonably high, postpone to next year and book longer in advance. Instead, I joined a friend on a trip Brünn/Brno and went hiking with my parents. 

I went to Brünn/Brno in Czechia to join a friend on his trip there. This trip showed some advantages of European Union and globalization. I went by train, and it would be the same by car, you don't even notice you are crossing a border. EU-wide roaming, including UK as well, means I can use online data at the same price as in Germany.

Czechia kept their currency Czech crown CZK. Normally I would change money, and have some left after the trip. But following my friend's example, I paid everything with my visa debit card. That worked well, only one food stall did not accept card payment (I asked before ordering and went elsewhere). My bank comdirect charges 1.75% for card payment (whereas withdrawal at ATM is free). For this short trip (5 days), it's well worth it. Saves me going to money exchange and dealing with cash and having money left over after the trip.

Prices (hotels, food, public transport) in Czechia are about half of what I would pay in Germany. My train ride from Berlin to Brünn/Brno would have cost about 130 EUR with German railways, but when I booked the same train with Czech railways it cost only about 80 EUR.

The public transport in Brünn/Brno works with payment by credit card as well. You tap your card when you board and again when you get off. When you forget to swipe off, the system assumes single trip. Their system collects your trips over the day and charges you for a day pass if the sum of single trips exceeds the cost of a day pass.

Update: At time of posting, the same has been introduced for MRT in Bangkok. I tried it and it works (German comdirect visa debit card). A trip that would have cost 38 THB was charged 1.00 EUR, at that time exchange rate was 1 EUR = 38.15 THB. Great for everyone without an MRT card! My Thai bank card (SCB mastercard debit) did not work. I probably would have to register for contactless payment before using it.

However the new bus service from Suvarnabhumi airport to hotels in Bangkok leaves me puzzled. There are gaps of over 1 hour between buses, and it's not cheap either at 180 THB. The wait alone can take longer than other public transport and the bus almost costs as much as a taxi.

Further on the subject of public transport, bus routes in Bangkok earlier this year got a new numbering system and most buses now have new and old line number written on bus. I recently got the viabus app and it's useful to follow buses that have GPS.

BTS with Rabbit Card does not show the cost of the trip. When I check in, it shows value on card, and when I check out, it shows remaining value and I have to calculate the difference for my diary (daily spending).

My parents and I went hiking in Germany. At a temperature of 15 C, I need only half a liter of water for a hike of 25 km horizontally and 500 m up. At a temperature of 20 C, that increases to one liter. In Thailand at 30 C, I would need six liter for this trip. And not just that I would have to carry six liter of water (or fill up along the way), most of it will be in my clothes as sweat. In Thailand, I calculate my water requirement as one liter for every 5 km horizontally or 500 m vertically. Recently I read an even simpler formula: 1 liter per hour.

I thought the location in mountain and forest would give a reprieve from heat and sun in Bangkok, I was wrong! Sightseeing temples and Pai Canyon. Walking and cycling to get around. No gay venues and little activity on gay online dating.

Young local woman Busan and man sit on bridge and chat me up when I pass. Interesting conversation, she likes to take trips around Chiang Mai to temples and nature with her car and we exchange social media to stay in contact.

Does most navigation from memory, rarely google maps. Car a bit dusty and messy, just the level I would have if I had a car.

A friend in Germany has a car fetish and owns 9 cars, more than I have underwear. And his cars are cleaner than my underwear.

Hospitals in Bangkok
A list of hospitals or medical service providers in Bangkok that I have been to, with some comments. All within 5 km of Sathorn/Silom. My focus is on general medicine, vaccinations and STD.

Bangkok Christian Hospital
Would be my recommendation for reasonable price and good service catering to foreigners.

BNH Bangkok Nursing Home
Already from walking past I can tell it will be expensive. But I had a recommendation from a friend for a doctor who works there, so I went once. Reception and interior decoration like a 5-star-hotel. And such are the prices! Later I found that the medicine I got there costs 5 times as in pharmacies elsewhere.

Mission Hospital
Similar to Bangkok Christian Hospital, I went following a recommendation for a doctor.

Chulalongkorn Hospital
With my hand swelling from broken bone (which I didn't know at that time, before going to hospital, previous post https://christianpfc.blogspot.com/2023/08/quiz-what-happened.html), I asked friends where I should go and two recommended Chulalongkorn Hospital. Great views of Lumpini park and former Dusit Thani hotel. Waiting area is (German: wie im Bahnhof, direct translation: like in a railway station, meaning people are coming and going, announcements are made, hubbub/pandemonium/turmoil). There can be 100 people, some on wheelchairs or stretchers, and their family in the waiting room. No complaints about service and prices, I guess the best value for money you can get in central Bangkok.

Thai Travel Clinic
In 2021/22 I went on a vaccination spee from rabies to HPV. HPV vaccine Gardasil 9 is rather expensive, Thai Travel Clinic was the 5,593 THB per injection, three needed. And their website https://www.thaitravelclinic.com is the most clear of all I have come across in the search for cheapest Gardasil 9. They are not out for a sale: I mentioned on two visits to two different doctors that I want to get vaccinated for meningitis (required for Hajj - not on my bucket list -, and recommended for gays after recent outbreaks in California) but they advised against and I followed their advise.

Snake farm is on their grounds. I was looking for Yellow Fever vaccination. It's in their list, but not available when I asked in person.

Pulse Clinic Silom
I have been going there for my annual or bi-annual (here in the sense of twice per year) STI test. But after discovering that Gardasil 9 is cheaper in Thai Travel Clinic, I went to look for other cheaper places for STI testing.

I had been to Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre near Lumpini park about 10 years ago, but found registration and waiting areas confusing.

I was searching for a cheaper, but still catering to foreigners and in Silom area, alternative to Pulse and came across Pripta in Chamchuri Square. Good views of Rama 4 road and Wat Hua Lamphong.

Bumrungrad Hospital
No personal experience, but from reputation and location I would guess that you can get treated cheaper elsewhere. The following quote confirms my assumptions:

Six days later I was on the plane to Bangkok and, although the swelling had reduced, there was still a good deal of pain and redness around the knee. After checking into the Nana Thai Mansion (a good budget hotel at the bottom of Sukhumvit Soi 4) I made a beeline to Bumrungrad Hospital, a place which is notorious for up-selling. I should’ve known better. Why I went there, I’ll never know. Possibly because it’s close to the accommodation area of lower Sukhumvit and is easy to access. When I went up to the 15th floor to check in, the place was jam-packed with Arabs all paying over the top prices for medication they probably didn’t need. After a bit of waiting time, and the scam “blood pressure check,” I was ushered into a ward and attended to by a doctor who seemed clueless. After a bit of prodding around the knee he announced, he was going to prescribe me another week of antibiotics and book me in for an ultrasound scan on the leg. When I inquired as to why I need the ultrasound, I was told I might have thrombosis as well as an infection. The price of the ultrasound was quoted at 9,500 THB. It was then and there that I determined I’d never go back to Bumrungrad Hospital.

A friend does all his medical business in Bumrungrad. He has health insurance, so price is not an issue, and he trusts their placement among the 150 best hospitals of the world.

Rutnin Eye Hospital
No personal experience, but a friend advised against going there because they have been resting on their laurels for decades and you can get same or better service for cheaper elsewhere.

Pharmacies
I do most of my business in those on Rama 4 opposite Chulalongkorn Hospital. A friend is vary of buying medicine in Asia and brings everything from Germany. I have no such concerns, everything I bought was effective. Even the few cases I bought ED medicine on the street in Pattaya, worked fine.

Medical service Thailand vs. Germany
I try to do all my doctor/hospital visits in Thailand. It's cheaper than in Germany and you get served quicker and it's closer. To see a dermatologist, my father had to wait 2 months for an appointment and travel 50 km a few years go (would be the same now)!
