No gay activities Jun-Aug2023 Germany

No gay activities Jun-Aug2023 Germany

There were no gay activities. Entertain my readers with other subjects, mostly travel and memes from internet.

Quiz: what is this? Solution at end of post.

After two months in Germany, I start seeing penises everywhere:

Vaginas as well:

Here I came across a place where I could get one (vagina). In the sense of getting access to a vagina, not as sex change. Prostitution is legal in Germany.  A job like any other, at least not dusty, as my loyal reader Vinapu puts it.

The movie “Pretty Woman” was in TV in Germany. Romantic comedy is not a type of movie I usually watch, but both the movie (Richard Gere, Julia Roberts 1990) and the song (unrelated to the movie, “Oh, Pretty Woman” Roy Orbison 1964) are famous, making the movie worth watching to fill a gap in general knowledge. Quite entertaining, and pertaining to my activities in Thailand, highly recommended to every punter and service provider!

I had plans to go to Brazil and Colombia, but flight prices were unreasonably high, postpone to next year and book longer in advance. Instead, I joined a friend on a trip
Brünn/Brno and went hiking with my parents.

I went to Brünn/Brno in Czechia to join a friend on his trip there. This trip showed some advantages of European Union and globalization. I went by train, and it would be the same by car, you don't even notice you are crossing a border. EU-wide roaming, including UK as well, means I can use online data at the same price as in Germany.

Czechia kept their currency Czech crown CZK. Normally I would change money, and have some left after the trip. But following my friend's example, I paid everything with my visa debit card. That worked well, only one food stall did not accept card payment (I asked before ordering and went elsewhere). My bank comdirect charges 1.75% for card payment (whereas withdrawal at ATM is free). For this short trip (5 days), it's well worth it. Saves me going to money exchange and dealing with cash and having money left over after the trip.

Prices (hotels, food, public transport) in Czechia are about half of what I would pay in Germany. My train ride from Berlin to
Brünn/Brno would have cost about 130 EUR with German railways, but when I booked the same train with Czech railways it cost only about 80 EUR.

The public transport in Brünn/Brno works with payment by credit card as well. You tap your card when you board and again when you get off. When you forget to swipe off, the system assumes single trip. Their system collects your trips over the day and charges you for a day pass if the sum of single trips exceeds the cost of a day pass.

Update: At time of posting, the same has been introduced for MRT in Bangkok. I tried it and it works (German comdirect visa debit card). A trip that would have cost 38 THB was charged 1.00 EUR, at that time exchange rate was 1 EUR = 38.15 THB. Great for everyone without an MRT card! My Thai bank card (SCB mastercard debit) did not work. I probably would have to register for contactless payment before using it.

However the new bus service from Suvarnabhumi airport to hotels in Bangkok leaves me puzzled. There are gaps of over 1 hour between buses, and it's not cheap either at 180 THB. The wait alone can take longer than other public transport and the bus almost costs as much as a taxi.
https://www.bangkokpost.com/life/travel/2643037/new-bus-service-connects-airport-to-500-hotels

Further on the subject of public transport, bus routes in Bangkok earlier this year got a new numbering system and most buses now have new and old line number written on bus. I recently got the viabus app and it's useful to follow buses that have GPS.

BTS with Rabbit Card does not show the cost of the trip. When I check in, it shows value on card, and when I check out, it shows remaining value and I have to calculate the difference for my diary (daily spending).

In my absence, Yellow Line (Ladprao to Samrong) has fully opened and Pink Line has started free trial runs https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2628690

My parents and I went hiking in Germany. At a temperature of 15 C, I need only half a liter of water for a hike of 25 km horizontally and 500 m up. At a temperature of 20 C, that increases to one liter. In Thailand at 30 C, I would need six liter for this trip.
And not just that I would have to carry six liter of water (or fill up along the way), most of it will be in my clothes as sweat. In Thailand, I calculate my water requirement as one liter for every 5 km horizontally or 500 m vertically. Recently I read an even simpler formula: 1 liter per hour.

Quiz: What's the purpose?

Quiz: What's the purpose?

A pre-quiz might be to find out what is shown in the picture. It's explained after the following cat pictures taken from:

22 Photos That Prove Anything Looks Better With a Cat Face

A wooden leg of a table in a small plastic cup in a large plastic cup, with water between the cups.

Solution in a week.

Solution: Table legs in cups filled with water to prevent insects from getting on the table.

You would think it's self explaining, but the friend I asked to look after my room during my absence managed to fill the inner cup with water, getting the wooden legs wet and leaching paint out of them.

Elsewhere I have seen industrially produced double cups, and the space between them filled with a powder that insects won't cross?

Temples sometimes have their library (ho trai หอไตร) in a building on stilts in a pool for the same purpose.

A cheap small-scale variant to store food is to get two plates, pour water on the first plate, then put the second plate on top. Food on second plate is now protected by water between plates.

Mrigadayavan Palace (north of Hua Hin, open to public) has a building that has a groove filled with water around the wall for the same purpose.

Recently seen in Cambodia in a plantation and on a market.

Solution in a week. There is no prize.

Solution/update: cashew nuts and cashew apple. Only after leaving Kampong Thom, I read on wikipedia which says that the cashew apple is soft and deteriorates quickly during transport, that's why I haven't seen any elsewhere, only here close to plantation. It's edible, and two well-travelled friend have eaten it, but I missed this chance!

Update: Some more in Kampot, and here I ate them and they taste good.

Congratulations everyone!
Changeable rechargeable batteries for electric motorbikes.

In rechargeable battery design, there are various properties to optimize, in no particular order:

1 Non-dangerous materials (not flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic),

2 High temperature range the battery can be used,
3 Low self-discharge,
4 High number of cycles,
5 High energy density (kWh/kg or kWh/l),
6 Low price,
7 High charging and discharging speed (e.g. a Lithium battery for a drone will be discharged in 20 minutes, try that with a lead-acid starter battery for a car and it will start boiling and deteriorate),
8 Good resistance to over- and undercharging (nowadays not a problem with microprocessor controlled charging and discharging).

It’s like squeezing a balloon, you optimize one, but lose another.

I always wondered why electric cars have batteries built in. Before cars, there were changing stations for horses, why not change the entire battery? Charging and discharging is controlled by microprocessor, so unlike used cars, all batteries are the same. Or the user does not own the battery, rather rents it.

And here in Taipei, finally, I see a charging station for replaceable batteries for electric motorbikes! That takes charging speed out of the properties to optimize (it doesn’t matter if it takes 2 or 10 hours).

All of my mobile devices (laptop, camera, mobile phone) used to have removable batteries. That allows me to take out the battery to reset the device (and all three had such severe software failures that only taking out the battery helped). And batteries are the most fail-prone part of a mobile device, not just losing capacity, but danger of leaking and destroying the rest.

Recent case: a hook-up in Bangkok brought his scientific calculator to my room and asked me for new batteries. I took a close look and beside AAAA cells to power it, I saw that there is a button cell that has leaked and was surrounded by a crust of salt, and probably corroded the printed circuit.

My previous mobile phone (Asus Zenphone) has a minor battery failure where after two years the battery lost capacity (now at about 1/3rd of original capacity) and started bulging. The bulging became so bad that you could see the screen bend. In the end, I had to cut off part of the back cover to give the battery space to bulge.

Removable battery is one of my major requirements for mobile phone. I think the higher complexity/weight/size (customer can open the case) more than compensates the inconvenience of having to go to a shop to replace the battery, or even worse lose the phone due to leaking battery. A friend used to have two batteries, and kept one fully charged at home, and swapped them when he went out so he always left home with a full battery. Alas current phones all seem to have battery built in, and so has my new phone.

This picture makes answering "where?" pretty easy,
but the major question is "what?".

Solution in one week.

This was used to tie elephants to (Gavroche insert issue number and page 2016 French language magazine). One educated Thai friend says it's from waterworks. Everyone else I asked has no idea.
