Plastic chairs

Plastic chairs

In remembrance of bangkokbois who had a catergory "ubiquitous plastic stool shot" (plastic chairs as well)
https://bangkokbois.sawatdeenetwork.com/category/travel-commentary-and-photography/travel-photography/ubiquitous-plastic-stool-shot/

and for a reader who did academic research on plastic chairs (in German):
Das beste Möbel der Welt - Ein kurzer Abriss zum Plastikstuhl namens Monobloc, diesem am weitestend verbreiteten Produkt der Menschheit
http://signal2noise.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/DER-FREUND-Monobloc-Jens-Thiel.pdf

The plastic chair has a wikipedia entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monobloc_(chair) and exhibitions in museums
Vitra Design Museum Monobloc – Ein Stuhl für die Welt 17.03. – 09.07.2017
https://www.design-museum.de/de/ausstellungen/detailseiten/monobloc-ein-stuhl-fuer-die-welt.html

Here a collections of pictures I took of plastic chairs and stools all over South-East Asia (some of them have been published previously on bangkokbois).

Pimp my plastic chair

Fix my plastic chair

(This picture taken 14jan2018. I have a similar picture of two damaged stacked above to make one usable, but I don't remember where it is.)

And these plastic stools in Hanoi do not look healthy either:

However, this one is beyond repair (Posted previously on https://bangkokbois.sawatdeenetwork.com/2013/07/28/ubiquitous-plastic-stool-shot-32/):

Collective noun for plastic chairs and stools
The following picture which I took at Wat Lok Molee in Chiang Mai raises the question: what is the collective noun for plastic chairs or stools? A family of plastic chairs?

The picture raises another question: a seating furniture with a back rest is a chair, a seating furniture without a back rest is a stool. But what are those with half a back rest?

Three different styles of decorated plastic chairs in a restaurant in Myanmar:

(Note for possible future extension of this post:

Wat Phra Thammakai has anyone ever seen that many?)

Funny pictures with plastic chairs

Not a plastic chair/stool, but fits the subject of funny pictures:

Words of Praise: Bangkokbois blog

Words of Praise: Bangkokbois blog

Today marks one year of the last entry on Bangkokbois blog. This should be an obituary, but "words of praise" sounds more positive.

I have been asked many times in private messages or as comments on my blog if I know what happened to him. We were in contact by email (and months away from meeting in real life), but that broke down upon his disappearance, so unfortunately I do not know any more than can be found here:

What happened to Rush's blog?

The blog was accessible under the following URLs: http://bangkokbois.wordpress.com/

Many thanks to surfcrest and Moses from Sawatdeenetwork for hosting and maintaining Bangkokbois blog.

Other great blogs that disappeared:

Books about architecture in Bangkok

Books about architecture in Bangkok

ASA Architectural Awards: Bangkok Walking Guide
The Association of Siamese Architect under Royal Patronage
800 THB, 338 pages, 2012, ISBN 978-616-7384-06-1.

All articles bilingual English and Thai. Each building is treated on one or two pages.

Mistakes:
p51 In 1944, after WWII,...
p57 BuildingNo.4 (space missing), เลย 4 -> เลข 4
p74 ...and Prince Salpasartsupphakit to gain revenue for
      the residents (makes no sense)

        (map) The Patenrum -> The Platinum
        Suan Lum Night Bazar is no more
p178 the board meetings were taken place (???)
p187 picture poor quality (
p240 emphsise -> emphasise
p274 open every year on April 28th -> 29th
p296 Bangsue district is the location of...and the country
        main railway terminal (currently just a minor station,
        construction for railway station going, will this become
        the main railway station and Hua Lampong a minor?

p320 Chroenpong -> Charoenpong
p331 Chao Phraya Express Boay Co., Ltd. -> Boat

Sra Pathum Palace is missing

Exploring Bangkok: An Architectural and Historical Guidebook by Robin Ward

800 THB,303 pages, 2014, ISBN 978-616-7800-33-2.

Entire book in English only, not even place names in Thai. Text is continuous, sometimes it's difficult to assign picture to text.

Mistakes and comments:
inconsistent use of accents on French words throughout
p31 Wat Pho - not the largest reclining Buddha in Thailand
p88 Phan Fa Bridge: The pillars have model ships...
      This is called rostral column
p106 Hapsburg Empire -> Habsburg
p144 Swissotel Nai Lert Park: phallus shrine not mentioned
p148 Hydro power is now delivered by electric cables. (???)
p149 minivan is a misnomer, it's either van or minibus
p217 Wat Kalanyanamit - not the largest sitting Buddha in T

Sra Pathum Palace is mentioned in entry for Siam Paragon and Kempinski hotel, but has no own article.

These two books are pretty similar in format and contents  and identical in price. I can recommend Bangkok Walking Guide over Exploring Bangkok for having Thai script and giving opening times and phone numbers.

European Heritage Map Bangkok & Ayutthaya
Free, one sheet 50.0 x 66.5 cm, folded 17 x 17 cm, 2013.
Was/is distributed for free in various embassies, cultural center and hotels, can be downloaded here:
http://www.eeas.europa.eu/delegations/thailand/europeanheritagemap/index_en.htm
see here as well:
http://www.thaitravelblogs.com/2013/09/european-heritage-map-of-bangkok-and-ayutthaya/
http://www.bangkok101.com/bangkok-european-heritage-map-goes-digital/

Bilingual English and Thai, street names on map only English.

Mistakes:
23 Manangkasila House is not shown on map
34 British Embassy spot on map should be moved a bit north to distinguish the British Embassy from Central Embassy (built on land that belonged to the British Embassy)

There are only few websites dedicated to architecture in Thailand, and then it's mostly religious architecture:
http://www.thai-architecture.com/index.html
http://www.thailandbytrain.com/TempleGuide.html

Update 12apr2017: there is a new book Architectural Guide Bangkok (DOM publishers), and I leaved through in a bookstore, and found the following mistakes: Neilson Hays misspelled, Royal Thai Survey and Ministry of Defense pictures swapped. Names only in English (no Thai script), no opening times. A poor start.

Collective nouns and majestonyms

Collective nouns and majestonyms

But first:

Pollyanna

noun Pol·ly·an·na \ˌpä-lē-ˈa-nə\ :
someone who thinks good things will always happen and finds something good in everything
After a character in a novel:

That aptly describes several posters on the gay forums. Give them any cock, at any price, and they will be happy as a pig in mud.

Tantalus

Tantalus (Ancient Greek: Τάνταλος, Tántalos) was a Greek mythological figure, most famous for his eternal punishment in Tartarus. He was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit ever eluding his grasp, and the water always receding before he could take a drink. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantalus

That describes my situation in Thailand. Cute boys are everywhere, in crowded areas I would just have to bend forward to kiss their neck, but as soon as I invite one to my room: cannot! So close that I could touch them, but as soon as I reach out they recede.

Collective nouns for freelancers and ladyboys

Quotes from stickman weekly column.

The Future of Nana Plaza (Stickman Weekly 28/9/2014)
What is the collective noun for freelancers, you know, the word used to describe a group of something, like a pride of lions.  How about a phalanx of freelancers, perhaps?  And for those of you who have ventured to the dark side, what would the collective noun be for a group of ladyboys?

Gogo Bars, There Is An Alternative (Stickman Weekly 5/10/2014)
In last week's column I asked what the collective noun was for freelancers, and also for ladyboys. There were a lot of funny responses and here are some of the best:
*  A gobble of katoeys.
*  A cuckold of ladyboys.
*  A clique of dick.
*  A fleece of freelancers, a danger, a risk, a temptation or an attraction even? And, of course, a scrotum of ladyboys!
*  If it's a pride of lions, how about a prance or a preen of ladyboys? Or, how about a buffet of ladyboys?
*  Given that a phalanx was a Macedonian army section with long stabbing spears, it really would be better as a phalanx of ladyboys.
*  I normally call a group of ladyboys a giggle or if they are of the more dishonest type, a dip. The only word to describe a collection of freelancers has to be a temptation of.
*  A head of ladyboys? A gaggle of ladyboys? A swallow of ladyboys?
*  Uncharitably, how about an importunment of freelancers? A desperation of freelancers? It is obviously a scrum of ladyboys. Or maybe a surprise of ladyboys?

Sloppy Service (Stickman Weekly 12/10/2014)
One more collective noun. I think I'd call them a plague of ladyboys!

Majestonyms

I learnt of the word “Majestonym” in the book “Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod” by Bastian Sick. The article is available online (in German):
ZWIEBELFISCH Von Modezaren und anderen Majestonymen Von SICK, BASTIAN 31.10.2005

There is nothing in English on the internet, here definition in German:

Majestonym, das
Eine moderne Wortfigur, bei der ein Wortbestandteil durch ein Wort aus dem Bedeutungsbereich des Adels 'veredelt' wird. Der gewöhnliche Wortbestandteil wird dabei verstärkt.
Beispiele: Schönheitskönigin, Modezar, Literaturpapst, Erklärkönig, Medienmogul, Denkerfürst.

http://www.wissenschaft-online.de/astrowissen/rhetorik.html

my translation:

majestonym, noun
A modern figure of speech which is composed of a common noun and a royal title (from all over the world). The common noun is thereby enhanced. Examples:
beauty queen, drug lord, king of pop, media mogul.

Majestonyms are wide spread in German, but less so in English. Recently, I have been called “prince of parsimony” (by Jellybean in http://sawatdeenetwork.com/forum/met-wonderful-thai-boy-confused-t32333-50.html) which raises the question: what do you call someone whose fame is to suck cock in public toilets (LMTU) or someone who spends a lot of time in gay saunas or gogo bars?

Alliteration in preferred, e.g. gaybutton could be the Pope of Pattaya (bangkokbois already calls him the mayor of Pattaya); LMTU the Toilet Tzar, or the Bathroom Baron, or the Cottage King. And which title is left for me?
